Agatha Christie’s Hjerson is the first-ever TV adaptation based on a spin-off character from Agatha Christie’s literary universe; a playful, contemporary whodunnit from the producers behind Midsommar and Before We Die.

Synopsis

Frustrated television producer Klara Sandberg is tired of making the trashy TV programs that have defined her career. In an effort to shake things up, she successfully pitches an all-new crime series starring the legendary detective Sven Hjerson, in which he cracks a new case every week. The catch? She has never met her unsuspecting star.

The once distinguished detective Sven Hjerson has made a name for himself thanks to his remarkable ability to read people and sniff out crucial evidence seemingly out of thin air. Despite his success, Hjerson mysteriously decides to step out of the limelight and put his sleuthing days behind him. That is, until he receives news of his mother’s death.

For the first time in over 30 years, Hjerson is forced to return to his childhood home of Åland, where Klara manages to track him down on a cruise ship heading to the archipelago. When a young journalist is murdered on board, the pair form an unlikely partnership, and a reluctant Hjerson and a zealous Klara start to solve a string of murder mysteries.

Sven Hjerson

Contained, enigmatic and intense, Sven Hjerson (Johan Rheborg) was once a renowned detective in Sweden. His skills are exceptional. Hjerson’s hypersensitivity to personalities and places has given him a razor-sharp sense of deduction; he can read people and see patterns in a way few others can. His career is littered with successful high-profile cases, but—rather suddenly—he chose to retire from detective work and retreat from the public eye, in favor of his particular version of the simple life: a strict regimen of vegan food, local gossip, and bespoke suiting. No one knows why.

Klara Sandberg

Chaotic, courageous and warm, Klara Sandberg (Hana Alström) is a TV producer who specializes in reality shows. Somewhere within her, though, lurks the ambition to create something meaningful and to be taken seriously. In Hjerson, Klara finds the yin to her yang—he’s cynical and analytical, never letting his emotions control his actions. Klara, on the other hand, believes in instinct, in going with the flow, and diving head-first into situations, consequences be damned. She thrives on chaos—something that carries over into her private life.

Press quotes

“I liked the character immediately. I haven’t done anything like this in my career before so it’s completely new. The fictional writer doesn’t like Sven and that also appealed to me. He’s a bit of an oddball. I immediately felt I wanted to defend him and create a character who is more alive than classic Scandi noir detectives, who are almost always depressed.”

Johan Rheborg via Drama Quarterly

“Everyone agreed that we would not make a dark realistic detective series. The classic Christie films have of course been an inspiration, but also new films and series such as ‘Knives Out’ and ‘Killing Eve’”.

Hanna Alström via Göteborgs-Posten

"You hardly need to have a master detective's inference ability to dare to say that C More's and TV4's Agatha Christie spin-off will be a hit."

Aftonbladet

“Even though Rheborg has impressed in several roles lately, it still feels as if the role as Hjerson is perfectly cut for him. Here his sharp tongue and sometimes slightly eccentric expressions come into their own.”

Filmtopp.se

“The framework is Agatha Christie’s, but … the result has become all the more playful and unconventional.”

Göteborgs-Posten
